Activities and Attractions in the Area

One of the oldest ports in the Red Sea awaits visitors to Safaga. The ancient Pharaohs operated their trade and the exploration of the sea from Safaga. In the 19th century the British recognized the special strategic importance Safaga, which was reinforced by the discovery of phosphate mines in the mountains. A visit to the harbour and a stroll through the city center are good starting points to familiarize yourself with Safaga.

An ideal location for wind surfers with near perfect slalom conditions with a constant thermal wind but no breaking waves. A highlight are the beaches and reefs for divers and snorkelers where the surrounding islands are popular destinations for diving  from the boat,  exploring the colorful water world of the Red Sea. Safaga has several diving centres that offer a good range of courses for all levels of availability.

An old Roman fortress, Mons Claudianus is at base of  Jebel Fatira mountains about 30 miles from Safaga which makes a fascinating day trip. Guided tours are available with good access routes to facilitate the visit of the fortress ruins. A good choice of other trips are available including  tours Luxor, the world famous Valley of the Kings, the wonders of the Pyramids of Giza which are available each day.

A range of hotels of all stars to suit all budgets can be found in and around the beaches of Safaga. Swimming pools, first-class food and friendly service characterize the hotels in this part of Egypt. The nightlife of the city itself is rather quiet, hotel bars and nightly walks on the beach can provide a good replacement.There are some bars that offer Argileh (Egyptian water pipe) and alcohol. If you looking for a wild night you can take a trip to Hurghada which is about an hour away.
The quiet night life is compensated by the excellent food with a choice of Egyptian and international cuisine which includes fresh fish, local dishes, fresh vegetables and the intense Egyptian sweets. End your feast with Egyptian mint tea and a fruity, refreshing Argileh.
